Change Your Child’s School Food: Farm to School

The Farm to School Program is bringing local farmed food into the cafeteria and classroom. It includes nutrition education, taste tests, farm field trips, community supported agriculture (CSA). Deb Eschmeyer explains that Farm to School helps children understand how food affects their bodies, the environment, and their communities.

“There is a myth that Farm to School programs are more expensive that traditional lunchroom programs, and that is not true across the board,” says Eschmeyer.

They key to starting this in your school is to start a conversation with the food service director, the school board, and local farmers, and discuss how you can get better food into your school.

This is something that I wish more schools knew about! Everyone loves local, but I know that my local schools still serve frozen pizza!
