Recently, Parent Earth was in the house at a standing-room-only listening session with Senator Kristen Gillibrand and Representative Joseph Crowley. Senator Gillibrand has been a forceful advocate for healthier food for all families and received props from Mark Dunlea of the NYC Food and Farm Bill Working Group and Joel Berg from the NYC Coalition Against Hunger.
Discussion focused on the Senator’s concern about NYC’s families living with food insecurity – she is working to increase food stamps by 30 percent, as well as increase emergency aid for food banks.
A sobering statistic she presented at the meeting: female-headed single households are more than twice as likely to be food insecure (as other households). On the happier side, 200,000 babies are prevented from dying each year due to WIC (Women Infants and Children) Nutrition Programs that bolster nutrition in the earliest part of life.
